"How does your 1871 partial census index work?"

THE THREE RULES

1./ The "Head Of The Household" has been indexed.

2. / Every first named person with a different surname to the "Head Of The Household"

is also indexed.

3./ Institutions (Workhouse, Hospital, Gaol), everyone is indexed.

Example below :- (Everything in YELLOW has been indexed)

75 Scarletwell Street, Northampton

Name Status Relation to Head Of House Age Occupation Place Born
George Rose Married Head  24 Hawker Highworth, Wiltshire
Mary Rose Married Wife 25 Hawker Northampton, Northants
Elizabeth Jane Rose  Unmarried  Daughter  6    Northampton, Northants
Emma Helena Rose  Unmarried  Daughter  8 Months    Northampton, Northants
Jane Bonham  Widow  Mother In Law  65    Bugbrooke, Northants.

On my index the above information would appear like this :-

75 SCARLETWELL STREET ROSE GEORGE 24
75 SCARLETWELL STREET BONHAM JANE 65

"Why didn't you index everybody on your census?"

It would have taken too long, (there were over 40,000 people in Northampton alone in 1871) and

I didn't want the project to take too long to complete. I decided from the start that a complete

"surname" index would be better than an incomplete full index. Please remember, this index is an

aid to finding your ancestors on the census, not a full transcription.

"What else do I need to know about this index?"

* The total number of people on my index is 22,913

* The census is stored on Microsoft Excel and can be searched by any of the given fields.

* There is a printed copy (Northampton town centre only) at the Northampton Records Office.

"How Do I Search This Index ?"

* Consultation and publication of results from my index is free of charge.

* A full list of forename, surname and age are now online here.

I have kept the street addresses on my spreadsheet, I can email these on request.

"Can I get a full transcription or of any of the households from this Index ?"

"Can I Buy This Index ?"

I can obtain full transcriptions of any the households from this index and other census returns as well.

It costs £5 to look up one household entry and obtain a full transcription, multiple entries are cheaper.

The index costs £6 (P+P included in price) to buy,

the index is supplied in Microsoft Excel, please remember this is only a partial index to

the census returns. Please email me at clarkealanj@myway.com to arrange payment.
